About

What is vasectomy?

Vasectomy is the common name for male sterilisation which is a popular method of family planning chosen by millions of men worldwide. It is regarded as safe and effective, and offers a permanent solution to contraceptive needs.

How does it work?

A simple procedure where the sperm-carrying tubes (called vas deferens) are sealed to prevent sperm entering the fluid which a man ejaculates. It takes about 30 minutes, and is one of the most effective methods of contraception.

What are the results?

After a vasectomy the testicles will continue to produce sperm as normal, but the sperm cannot enter the tubes and is simply absorbed into the body. You will still form an ejaculate after a vasectomy, but it will not contain sperm nor will you experience any major side effects.

The vasectomy procedure & aftercare

Vasectomy is one of the safest and most effective methods of permanent birth control.

It is a minor surgical procedure which takes about 30 minutes. Basically the procedure involves dividing both VAS deferens which carry the sperm from the testes to the exterior. The production of seminal fluid continues as normal.

The method used is the no-scalpel, no-suture, open-ended procedure. This is carried out using local anaesthetic.

The testicular end of the VAS is left “open” and buried in a sack of tissue, this sack is closed by a small titanium clip. This results in the ends of the VAS being in different planes. The incisions in the skin are so small that they do not require sutures.

After surgery, complete rest (bed or couch) is very important for 24-48 hours. This measure reduces the possibility of pain and complications. Tight supportive underwear is essential, bring these along at the time of surgery. Other methods of contraception must be kept in place until there are 2 sperm free tests. This procedure will be discussed at the time of surgery.

FAQs

What are the complications of vasectomy?

Frequently there is bruising and discolouration of the scrotum after the operation. This disappears in a few days.

Some swelling and tenderness of the testicle can also occur. This is treated by scrotal support and anti-inflammatory medication.

Sometimes a small nodule, called a granuloma can occur at the site of surgery. This rarely needs treatment.

Testicular pain can occur – but this is rare when the “open-ended” technique is used.

Skin infection is rare and can be treated with antibiotics.

Rarely there is a collection of blood or haematoma in the scrotum. This complication can occur if the patient does not rest for at least 24-48 hours after the operation. This is limited by scrotal support and anti-inflamatory medication.

Can the vasectomy be reversed?

This is possible but the success rate is 50% – 75%. The longer the time since the vasectomy, the lower the success rate.

Is there a failure rate?

A sperm test will be carried out a minimum of 16 weeks after the procedure. It is desirable to have had at least 25 ejaculations during this period. Once this test is sperm free the failure is approximately 1 in 3000. Failure is commonest in the early period after the vasectomy.

Will it adversely affect my sex life ?

No, it may actually enhance it, once the anxieties of a possible pregnancy are removed

And no

– vasectomy does not cause testicular or prostate cancer.

“It didn’t hurt much, and there wasn't any swelling, the recovery was faster than expected too. Wish I’d done it years ago!”
